"Biogenic Sand"

In this workshop, we will focus on the common marine invertebrates whose carbonate skeletons we find in sand including mollusks, sea urchins, barnacles, and corals. We’ll discuss morphology, the structure and form of those organisms and see examples in macro samples. We’ll also consider taphonomy; this is the study of how organisms break down after death and how chemical, physical and/or biological processes transform the skeletal remains from whole into grains the size of sand.

Workshop Presenter: Kate Clover
